In 20 years I've had one hardware problem. And now there is great software available (Parallels) if you need to run Windows on your Mac.
X2! Been using Mac for work for decades also, 1 bad harddrive in that time, out of 18 computers.
Don't have the program not responding error ever!!
It asks if I want to upgrade so and so, about once a month, maybe. If I tell it not now, it actually obeys!!!

You will no longer get updates for XP such as security updates! If your computer has enough memory load 7 or 8.

I got the problem solved or just jumped in to another one. Went and bought a new Mac and did not load Windows 7 on it. It's a little scary. Everything including the tower is built into the monitor that is less than 1/2 inch thick. I got 3 pieces, a monitor, mouse and keyboard. All wireless. Crossing my fingers.
    Tell'em I'll be there.

Sounds like you got yourself an iMac, stormcloud. Congratulations. I'm on my second, the first lasted 9 years. If you do not need to run Windows-only applications, then you won't need Windows 7.
