past experience would be first, reports would always be a plus. or maybe water temp-vs. water depth for the time of yr.

I use my electronics when I first get on water. Phone reports can help too put you where most recent catches are however fish move a lot so don't feel bad if you go fish a place and don't catch one that your buddy just slayed them in.

depends where you are, but this time of year, I usually start shallow in the afternoons, and if no fish there, then I start moving deeper. If that doesn't produce, I start moving and trying the same strategy in another area. and so on until I find some fish.

If you have a buddy that fishes the lake, ask him/her how deep, and structure they were fishing. Or do a search for the lake on this site, you might find another crappie.com member that fishes the lake you are on, send them a PM, most will give you a starting point, if not tell you everything they know about the lake.

Good luck, and don't give up, it takes some time to figure this stuff out. God knows I sure didn't learn anything one my 1st 296 trips on the water.

    No luck,

I'm a novice myself but typically I start where I have caught fish before and find some consistency that way. I typically start deep and slowely work my way shallow in the area I know should be holding fish. What I have trouble with is fishing in 5-6 FOW and only fishing 1-2 ft deep, it's completely a mental thing for me. I have been a single pole fisherman all my life but after doing some research, watching a ton of YouTube videos, and listening to all the excellent advice on here, I'm caving in and buying a 4 pole spider rig.

I had no luck the last time I went. It was a total shock to me since I am not accustomed to such fishing. I think I will quit and take up golf

Personally, I don't like to make the phone calls cause part of the fun fishing is the finding, but I'll tell you this, one more trip like the other day and someones phone is gonna be ringing off the hook. I think the first call is gonna be to D10 and ask him how many batteries I'll need in the boat to do that electro fishing thing. From his previous post, I've already figured out you need to do it at night.
