The 950 ft2 addition is going to need a separate cooling/heating unit. We called the most well known contractor in the area to come out and give us a quote. He comes out I told him I want a package unit (thermodynamics has taught me much more efficient) like the one I have now, instead of a split unit most folks have. He says okay. Then I said I want a propane furnace in it just like I have now in the current unit. He say's nobody does a propane furnace except for the propane dealers. I asked why, he say's because it's dangerous and it's inefficient and expensive. I told him it's only dangerous because it's heavier than air, so one must diligent in their installation. As far as efficiency, natural gas (methane) has a energy content of ~1,000 BTU/ft3, while propane approaches ~2,600 BTU/ft3. So, BTU cost, propane reins. Would prefer Butane with an a content of ~3,200 BTU/ft3, but it's boiling point (no longer gaseous at ~30F) is at roughly 3,200 BTU/ft3.
He says for rural households now a days everyone does the heat pump thing, all electric. I said okay, tell me more. What's the amperage requirement for such a unit I asked? He says at least 60 amps! I told him that anything that draws 60+ amps is not efficient! We went back and forth a while and he left with his tail between his legs. Meanwhile, Ann just rolls her eyes, she's used to it.
What I want is a 3 ton package unit for this addition. Many, many years ago I had the same argument with another contractor about the current unit I have now. All said and done, works just fine regardless of his "expertise".
Can't wait to the slaughter the shiners at Toledo Bend next week. Need a break.
