(DOWN)(for vertical jig fishing)The Great Bass/crappie fishing (yes crappie fishing) legend the General (Larry Nixon) showed us in a bass fishing class at a bass club meeting that for greater feel of the strike or bite that the line going through the guides down has a greater feel because the less line touching a guide or rod blank (guides up) has less feel of the bite or strike!! Mr Nixon has made a very good living in the world of bass fishing!!

I'm addicted to guides down. I have a few baitcast reels that I'll use once in a blue moon.

I use baitcasters on all my spider rig rods.....I place them in the rod holders upside down so the eyes are down.....can see the bite better this way ... after I set the hook I turn rod eyes up and reel the fish in. Works for me
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

I knew a guy who would wrap a bait caster with the first 2 guides that would move the line path around to the bottom. His reasoning was that if you bend a rod with guides up the line touches the rod twice for each guide. He called it a Robert's wrap. Easy to do on a 2 piece rod and makes sense as well.

There used to be Bass rods made that way, a long time ago !! And they're still being made ... they're called "Spiral Wrapped" or "Acid Rods".
I had one similar to those rods for awhile, but it was one that I modified and not one of the commercially available ones. It worked fine, but I really never thought it was more efficient than my other rods.
