You pull and push at the same speed. I usually start out at 1.7 mph. I would run the same speed if I was only pushing although you could push at any speed since the weight already has the bait at your desired depth.
I haven't had any troubles with line twist assuming my crankbait is running right.

if you go with a smaller CB, do you need more weight to get to the same depth as the 300's??

I don't think so. I think your weight and line out pretty much control your depth
Since primarily fish a shallow lake 5-15 fow i watch my lure and as soon as the rod tip starts that bounce thats it,usually about 1.2-1.5.
