I too have been in a boat were all three of us used the exact same set-ups, right down to the same rod and reels. One guy was not catching a thing and he was fishing the same spot we were. I mean the exact same spot. I'd pull my line out, he dropped his in the same spot, nothing, he pulled out and I put mine back and bam fish on. The only difference we could figure out was he used a different hand soap than me. Sometimes its more than line, technique, etc. Smell plays a huge roll too. Seen smokers in the same situation not catch a thing too. They bait up with the other hand and fish on.
