Yer jerk'n too hard!!!!

Back in the '80s my father-in-law & two brother-in-laws & I was fishing for gills on Spear lake in Northern Indiana. We were using 25 foot long jay-hawkers (telescopic cane poles). My youngest bro-in-law (David) was around 15 years old, his other brothers didn't have much to do with him. They never took him fishing, hunting or let him hang out with them. I felt sorry for him & tryed to include him as often as possible. I was reluctant to take Mike my oldest bro-in-law, because I knew he would be too critical with David's every move, but I took him anyway. Sure enough David went to set the hook, Mike yelled, "David you're jerk'n too hard!!!!". About 5 more times, "David you're jerk'n too hard!!!!". Believe me, Mike's brow beatings was starting to get to me. When suddenly Mike's bobber went under, with all his might, Mike whipped his 25 foot jay-hawker (with 25 foot of line tied to the tip) to the sky with enough force to whiplash an elephant's neck, from the depths rocketed a 3 inch gill, spiraling into the air, 25 feet of line above a 25 foot jay-hawker, (50 feet total) directly above my boat, the gill stopped, then plummeted toward the earth & landed at Mike's feet. Without hesitation David said, "Mike, yer jerk'n too hard". We laughed & shook so hard I thought we was going to capsize. To this day, at about every family get together some one will say, "Yer jerk'n too hard!!!".

Too funny!!! I've heard of flying fish, but never flying gills. :D Reminds me of the time I was trying to teach my daughter how to set a hook. Everytime her cork went under, she would start e-a-s-i-n-g up on her rod. I took her rod from her and attempted to demonstrate how she had been doing it. I started e-a-s-i-n-g up on the rod. Just as I said, "You'll never catch a fish this way", I lifted a hooked crappie out of the water.

She still reminds me of my little demonstration, from time to time.:D:D:D

Hilarious!! First time I took my daughter fishing, I mean real fishin, handling her own pole and everything, she had a hard time responding quickly to the bobber action. Could have been that I had dragged her out of bed at 7 am on a weekend, but effort was lacking. They day heated up quick and I had my shirt off for all of about 5 minutes when the bobber went down. She had woken up I guess, cuz she yanked so hard that I had a 7" crappie smack me right in the chest! To this day, if it weren't for that moment, I don't think I would have ever got her back out there again.

I was fishing with a friend and his 5 YO son one time when the boy hooked a nice little bass. He got so excited that he forgot to reel, he just took off running and screaming, with this poor fish bouncing along about 20 feet behind him!

Good ones fellas, ok so here's mine, last fall my son and I were way back in one of the feeder creeks on our local res (my son was 9 at the time) fishing several laydowns and just catching em like crazy. My son throws his jig/cork within inches of the bank, I tell him "son your not gonna catch one that close" about mid-sentence his cork meanders under and he sets the hook and lands a nice one, so we both laughed, and I tell him "you got lucky you little knuckle head" about that time he cast to just about the same spot within inches of the bank, again I tell him "boy stop it before you get hung up" no sooner than I say the word you his float meanders under again and he nails another nice one, he looked at me with a smile on his face, landed it, tossed it in the live well. At that point I just shut my mouth and watched my little man go to work ha ha, fishing with kids is GREAT!!!! Have a great week yall, God bless

I took my three kids fishing by myself once. They were about five, seven and ten. We had went to a farm pond where I knew was over run with little sunfish. The two oldest could handle their own business with the exception of a deep hooked fish. The youngest couldn't do much more than just hold the pole, when we got there. I had baited up her hook, flipped it out there, and turned to check the other kids. She got to squallin and caught one. I went back to her, took it off, baited her up, flipped it out there, turned to the other kids - squalling, caught another one. Repeat that about five more times right in a row... That was the day she learned how to cast, bait a hook, take a fish off the hook (except deep hooked fish). I bet they caught a hunnert of them. :D :D
