That is one good question, and an inexact science. I try my best to drop them into open water deep enuf to cover the tops, and then try my best to not interfere with others who have found them before me.
These are not really homeless per se crappie, but have been known to seek refuge in sheltered spots and even hang out if things suit em. I am much too much the sportsman to say I would try sucker them into a pre-baited location, but along the same lines, not so chikkinchit I wouldnt scoop em up in a seine net if they showed thick on the fish finder.
