Default 2006 VA fish citation database

If you are into data, VA has published their 2006 citation database. Here is a link:

    http://www.dgif.state.va.us/fishing/varp/citations.asp

Looking through the database, I see that Chick Reservoir had 0 citations for crappie. I guess we need to stick with the riva.

Buggs Island (96) was the place to go and Beaverdam (6) didn't do too bad.

Interesting reading. I should have been registering my citation crappie all these years. I'd only need 4 or 5 more to qualify as an expert. Nowaday its hard to find one over 1lb unless Jeff takes me.

Great find Keith, thanks for posting, I love this kind of stuff. (especially since my names on the crappie list twice. :D)

Call me a nut but I counted 532 crappie citations, here it is by month:

What's the feeling here about all these citations caught at private ponds?

What are your feelings on length citations vs. weight citations?

I have always felt like weight citations tell you more about a fish.

I have no problem with either one.

Welcome to the board N2fish. I fished for years ignorant of the fact you could get citations for just length. I think length is a good thing as weight can vary a lot during the year.

As long as the private pond is not managed to produce trophy fish (i.e. - no special variants of fish or special feeding), I'm ok with it. Record fish from those ponds is another matter.

It's all about catch and release. Measuring length enables the angler to release the fish quicker...Good thing. Most novice fisherman think weighing means taking the catch to some certified scale at the local bait shop. Which usually means killing the fish.
Agree with PM that weighing is more accurate. I believe the VIGF gives you a little more leway when allowing the angler to qualify the fish by length. I have measured fish by length and they came up short on the weight when considering a citation.
The goal is set at weight or length so one is as valid as the other.

You forgot to mention "or when I fish a bash against him on his home pond." :D
