Looking Good. I know it's a lot of hard work but it's also a lot of fun.
Yeah. It is hard work. I am wore out every time I get a step done and I don't care what you do, the fiberglass is going to get all over you. I am having a blast doing this though. It is fun doing something new and My uncle is keeping me from making expensive mistakes and saving me a ton of time. Be glad when I can get it fishable so I can try it out. Will have more to do later on the top cap but its going to bring in some fish before it gets pretty.CF
Been getting some work done on the boat but with work it is sporadic and spread out but here is what we have done since the last pics were posted.

Transom was glassed in on the inside and it is solid as a rock.
The only pieces of original wood that is being reused is capping off the foam pockets on either side of the transom. They were cleaned up and turned out really well. I have also ground off the excess mat that is frayed all out the top. It is nice and clean now.

Over the past couple weeks been cutting out the floor pieces. First had to clean off glass trimmings where we had previously done the floor bottoms.
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8urnx8kp.jpg
Then we cut to fit. I am no carpenter so this has taken a while to do but got the pieces to fit in nicely.

http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...psbqgssw7z.jpg
Then while I did not have much time, I polished off a little section of the top cap just to see what kind of work I am going to have to do to the gel coat.

I think it is going to come out nicely. Long ways away from that part. Just testing some stuff on the finish right now.CF
Your doing a good job.....its a lot of work , but its gonna be nice
Ed you sure do have that thing looking good. You do nice work for a FARMER. :biggrin
Ed, I don't know if you know it or not but when you get fiberglass all over you take a cold shower first to get that stuff off. A hot shower open pores on your skin and makes it harder to get the glass off. It does help a lot.
Who said he showers, he's a farmer and it's planting time. He has no time for such things accept maybe late saturday night or early sunday morning.
Thanks Bill. Yeah, that was one of the first thing my uncle told me to do when we got started. It helps ALOT. Grinding will get it all over you. I have had it stuck on me so many times this year that I have gotten used to it. That stuff is rough and it is amazing how it gets all over you so quick. It gets the underside of my arms the worst. I don't care what I put on over my arms, that crap gets on them every time.CF
I got an old Corvette you can work on when you finish the boat....you're getting good with that glass..................
Been getting some work done on My boat. Glad to get back to it. Floors finally mounted in.
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...psrc04avhf.jpg
run a bead of 5200 down the stringers and screwd wood down into the stringers with 2" stainless steel screws. You can also see where I mounted the through hull fittings and livewell pumps before I put the floor in.
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...psubfa1itp.jpg
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...psg7wruvx7.jpg
Was pondering what to do about the seams around the floor as they would present an issue trying to lay the main sheets of glass. The cracks would cause air pockets and would be a potential delamination problem. So after discussing it with My Uncle and his Nephew (who is the owner of Layton Boatworks) I was advised to just use Bondo and fill the gaps . I could have used Resin peanut butter but it would have been more expensive with the use of resin. So I prepped the wood for Bondo to make sure all wood surfaces were sealed in resin first.
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...psbbaf3wdc.jpg
Then came the bondo. I used a gallon and a half to fill everything around the floor. This was around $30. You have to work fast with that crap. Only get 5 good minutes before it is unworkable. Spent all the next day grinding it down and then this past sunday was spent vacuuming out all the dust and giving the entire inside surface of floor and hull an acetone bath.
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...psdchgj5xx.jpg
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...ps38qcl2nw.jpg
After getting all that yellow dust out of the boat, Yesterday i cut strips to go across the seams of the floor pieces, frayed all sides of the strips so no seams would show up in the main sheets to be layed next and have a nice level smooth floor. Then resined them in. This is just a little more reinforcement and will make the floor more solid.
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...psf3eariey.jpg
As Soon as this sets up good, I'll be ready for the main glass work. The whole floor will be covered with two sheets of 1 1/2 oz. mat. with the two sheets of glass and 3 layers of resin, the floor will be around 3/16" to 1/4" thicker getting up close to 3/4" floor and with that much on top, the seams of the 1/2" wood will have no issues with flex. All seams were tied in to support beams that were made into the stringers except for one section. I had to make some scabs out of dry fir 2X4 and were screwed in under two pieces making them solid. Everything coated in resin.
After the next glass work is done on the floor, I will be ready to put the cap back on. I will be SOOOOO glad!CF
Here is one more pic of a glassed seam...

Check the last post on page 9 for all the latest pics.
Got more done the past few days. filled is a couple holes up front so glass would have something to adhere to.
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2i1hgaxh.jpg
Cut and laid out glass...
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...psofsjwwyh.jpg
Did some trimming up to shape of the floor and then FINALLY wet it down with resin.
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...ps92p7j2ih.jpg
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9f1ewx1a.jpg
Today, cut out the final layer of glass for the floor. The pic is not the finished product.worked on it another couple hours after this pic and now have it ready for resin for the last time.
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...psttpqxl5o.jpg
Hopefully get the resin work done tomorrow.CF
Gosh. Did not realize how much I had gotten done since my last post. Once I got the floor glassed in, I put a coat of gelcoat on areas that would be under the decks from the top cap.
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...pssmedxphh.jpg
Next was time to put the cap back on...
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...psvihid4se.jpg
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...psrbzgja6v.jpg
After I got the cap and rub rail back on, I pulled carpet out and found this....
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...psnr8aavs5.jpg
Had to cut the rot out underneath. Ended up cutting a large section of front deck out.
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...psvytuxrtk.jpg
Cut out some plywood using the cut out as a stencil. Had to be really careful for a tight fit. Then cut some cleats to screw and glass in underneath to support the new floor.
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...pspwqokteb.jpg
You can see where I had to layer in some extra glass to level the surface a bit. Up to 4 strips of 1 1/2oz. mat were placed looking like a topo map.
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...psasymtc56.jpg
Turned out great.
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...psnknvxgcv.jpg
Then I prepped the front deck, cockpit floor and rear deck for an application of bed liner type material called Durabak by sanding all surfaces heavily with 60 grit sandpaper.
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...pspmmw8vig.jpg
Did not get a good pic of the durabak job as I had to work fast but had to do a portion over because it was not prepped good enough. I pealed and wire wheeled it back up and put down an etching primer and redid the job and it turned out really well the second time. will see some of it later and I'll get a better pic when I wash the boat next time as there is a layer of dust on everything right now.
Here is where I am now. Got all pumps in place, wired and plumbed up. Installed two fuse panels under the front right console. Will have to fabricate a cover for it. Got steering cable run and steering wheel installed. Had to fabricate a backing plate for my steering setup ans the hole in the dash was too big. Today, Ricky and I sealed and bolted on the Jack plate to the transom and then mounted the motor and attached the steering cable....
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...pswthkyzx3.jpg
You can also see the durabak that I put on the rear deck in the pics.
http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...psyfnfeenn.jpg
I had to do some finagling on the door hinges all around the boat because removing the carpet threw the doors off. I put some small strips of carpet back behind the hinges to make them work properly or borrowed a jig from a boat builder for installing new hinges and did that on the rear door. Worked great.
Still have to rig in the gas tank, motor controls, get motor running again (been 2 years) and rig up trolling motor. Then after sea trials, I'll rig up depth finders and rod holders.CF
You have done a fine job on that boat, good luck with the sea trials. Will be looking forward to finished pics.
Looking good!!
Nice work man! Something to be proud of for sure. Hope to see some perch coming over the side of it around February!
That's an awesome job you are doing. You obviously care about doing the job right. Thanks for sharing your progress.
Hope you catch plenty of fish out of that boat. You have earned them.
Well got to a point with some of the motor stuff and said heck with it and called my mechanic to help speed things up. He worked on it and got me in good shape. cleaned carbs, mounted and hooked up controls, new water pump and lower unit seal and water separator for a really good price. i just got the trolling motor on yesterday. put bench in today. new seats ordered for the bench. Be ready for sea trials in the next couple days.

still got rod holders, depth finders to rig on boat after sea trials. then some fishing and then a little later, will spend some time shining her up.
Outstanding Job...............
Cool deal. Looking great. Hope to see some perch reports from you before long.
looking very good. you have done a very nice job on your boat
Oh no! Looks like NWR bash will be seeing the crappie machine in action. The crappie will be shaking in there boots. You got the fear of lead poison on them woodsgoats. All kidding aside Ed will be nice to see you and such a beautiful boat again on the water. I know what it's like. Had to rebuild a trailer my self.

Got it in for sea trials today. Jumped right up on top and ran like a scalded dog. Just as fast as the smaller older hull! Don't let anyone tell You a 115 won't push a 20' bass boat. It won't break speed record but will get the job done until I can put more ponies on the back.
Had a couple small leaks in the livewell plumbing. Forgot to put silicone on the livewell pump hose barb elbows the screw onto the pumps. took an hour to get a gallon of water. Got to test the bilge pump from that though. It worked like a champ.

Been a long time coming!:cheers2:biggrin:biggrin:biggrin
Talked to an old fella today at the ramp that just finished going through overhauling his third boat. I told him he had lost his dang mind!CF
Just realized I am only 4 days short of the two year anniversary of buying this boat. I thought it had been longer than that. Been 2 years and 2 and a half months since I have been crappie fishing.CF
That sorta looks like Pembrooke. Been many years since I've been down there.
You would be right on Bill.CF
nice job,go get em
Boscoe will still come and kick your butt with a big fatty perch!!
That reminds me. Anyone heard from Shellquacker?
Shellquacker and his son could flat out catch some fish. They handed my xxx to me at Little Creek and Buggs. They let me fish beside them on a flat in Bluestone and put on a clinic while I caught nothing.
