You are making good progress. Working on your own boat is kind of neat...it beats the heck out of working on something like a bathtub or toilet.

That's alot of work Farmer! Slap it back together in time for the bash hahah heheh
Um, have you ever met Farmer. I'd recommend a bit of floatation back into that boat before Paul Bunyan gets has gigantor butt back in there!
Ed do you plan on putting foam back in your hull? Take it from me I wish I did when I restored the blue bomber. Remember it sank two years ago.
No. After seeing how this boat is put together, I am going to leave the foam out. However, the stringers are just thick fiberglass forms about 1/2 inch thick and are foam filled all the way to the bow. That is staying in. The restof the areas are stripped and will be beefed up with more glass. These boats are just a sponge with the foam in contact with wood. Just condensation will cause water retention and eventual rot. I am not going to do this job again so am eliminating that future issue.CF
Got the hull out today and washed it down and left it out in the sun and wind to dry most of the day. Brought it back in, sat a fan in it to blow for a few days. Also cut some cardboard for the template for the new transom. Now got to go price some composite material for the transom.
Got a outfit down here that refurbishes boats of all types from bass boats to Albemarle and Carolina classics to jig built charter boats. The owner told me he had some scrap composite that I probably get what I needed for my transom. He said it was like $350 a sheet but would sell me the scrap to save a bunch on it so we will see. I have about made my mind up regardless on the composite. I can't afford to do the floor but I would not have to ever worry about the transom rotting again. CF
Once I have materials cut, will clamp transom boards together along with glass and resin. Once the resin kicks, will install it with more glass and resin and clamp on the transom until resin kicks again. Then on to the floor.CF
A Farmer with a Mind LOL LOL. Heck of a project you got going on there Ed. Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see her finished.
Looking for opinions on carpet alternatives. Looking for a more rubber type surface.thanks.CF
Sir, great post thank you, fun to follow. I recommend taking a look at Hydro-Turf. Rubbery, cool in the summer, and it has stayed put in my boat; mine is camo as I have to do double duty in duck season. Great job.

Looks like I will be down longer than I thought. I can't get the room I have the boat in warm enough, long enough for resin to cure. Have had no luck with the weather on getting a warm enough day. Looks like it will be sometime this spring before glass gets done and with field work getting underway around that time, it is starting to look like late summer before I will be back on the water again.
I can't use wood heat or any other type heater with an open flame. Could risk blowing the roof off of the building. Need electric heat with a really good fan to circulate air. I don't have one and am not going to spend a pile of money on a heater that won't get much use. Heating a cinder block building is tough. I hate that something this simple is holding me back. Still got a ton of work to do.CF
Get a few of these. You only need to warm the surface to normal temps (60-100*)
HDX, 150-Watt Incandescent Clamp Light, CE-300PDQ at The Home Depot - Tablet
Ed you should go rent you a climate control storage building. That would be cheaper than buying some heaters and you would get by in 1 month. I think they have one available right down the road. Speck
Ed, I think he was talking about the boat. Not your tan
man its like a novel- just waiting on the next chapter....... good read!!
Well believe me, its not writers block holding up the next chapter. Its weather block. I need warmer weather and instead getting the deep freeze. I did get some windshields for the boat today though. I am ready to write the finale chapter on this book and start the new one about the fishing adventures with it!CF
Checked the windshields today for fit and they look great. Had someone contact me out of the blue on these and got them for $50 a piece and one was still in plastic. These brand new are $125 a piece so I had to jump on them now.

Now I just need some weather. Got these windshields from a guy in King William VA. Wish I had had more time to get up with someone here to grab a bite to eat or something on my way back but the deal happened real fast. Made the deal Saturday night and left early Sunday to get them.CF
Wow..........I hope you only paid a dollar for this deal of a boat.:biggrin
It looks like a hover craft from the future.
windshields look good- i know what ya mean bout the weather- got new helix in last thursday & been too damn cold to get out there & put it on the boat! waiting for next chapter & warmer weather! we got 2-3" of global warming now & its coming down like a blizzard.............
Boat was free. Paid $450 for the trailer which is in great shape. Will have a little more than a grand tied up in it when I'm done. Going to get it seaworthy and fishable first. Will fish out of it some and then next summer will do the work over on the gel coat. Its covered in fiberglass dust right now and does not really look as bad as the pics show but is heavily oxidized. Will probably wet sand it next summer and buff in some polish and bring it back out as much as possible.
I know what I got. Its a lot of work but when I get through, the structure of the boat will be stronger than what came from the factory, the wiring will be simpler and more efficient, I have a good motor for it, there wont be any carpet so I can blow the boat out and not have to worry about keeping carpet clean. It will never look new unless I regel coat the boat but I am not going to do that because I don't want to baby the thing that much. It is a wider bigger platform than what I had before. For a little over a grand, I cant buy a boat with the guarantee that it will be like this one will be. It will be exactly how I want it. A bigger boat that is built to put fish in the boat that will not have the high maintenance of a brand new boat. If I scratch it, I won't give a crap. I'll just get it presentable.CF
Yeah, it looks retarded right now! I'm am so ready to drop that cap back onto the hull I don't know what to do. Got my forklift tied up with it right now too. Got $900 worth of material sitting around waiting for warmer weather. The more I want it to warm up, the colder the weather gets. The windshields gave me a small victory. The stuff that has to be done once the cap is back on will go much faster. If I could have gotten the glass work done right after I got through with the prep work, I would just about have it ready for sea trials by now and maybe even make it to the Bash. Oh Well. Will get it done when this weather breaks.CF
The worst part about this whole deal is that I have time right now to do this stuff. It is all under shelters and in buildings. The cold and rain is not an issue as far as me doing the work. I think about all I could be doing if that cap was on right now but all I can do is look at it. when the weather gets right, the fieldwork will start too. So I will have the right weather but won't have the time.Sucks big time.CF
Looking good cant wait to see top go on and ready for water.
fell your pain man-- got a couple warm days here so while i was waiting on the snow to melt got to work on my boat a little- ready to mount the Helix now but hope, and need to work the rest of the week.....waiting on your next chapter......
Got back on the boat yesterday morning. Got some fiberglassing done yesterday finally! started with the center floor between the stringers. The hull was only 1/4" thick so beefed it up with 2 layers of 1 1/2 oz mat and 2 layers of woven mat.

http://i1373.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5vsrfsl7.jpg
Then resined and glassed up 1/2 of the transom, put the other half over it and screwed it down until the resin squished out around the sides.

Then started on what will be the bottom side of the floors.

This was a single layer of 1 1/2 oz mat. The to side will be done later. It will be cut to fit the hull inside then the top side will be glassed with a couple layers of 1 1/2oz mat. The only other place now that will have woven glass will be on the transom. got clamps ready and will post pics of that when clamps are installed. Got to get another 5 gallons of resin and 100 feet of 1 1/2oz mat monday morning. Started at 8am and ran out of material buy noon. Went and got on the tractor until 10:30 last night. Fiberglass kicked in about an hour after we were through. Cured out good now. More to come.CF
Oh yeah. Center hull is now 1/2" thick instead of 1/4". The hull bottom is going to be built like a tank when we are done.CF
Got the transom put in this evening. We wet the old inside fiberglass skin down with resin and then applied 3 sheets of 1 1/2oz mat that we precut to fit the transom. Applied resin and wet down each layer thoroughly. then rolled the back side of the transom wood with resin, placed in the slot, Ran some screws through the motor mount holes from the back outside to pull the new transom up until we could get clamps on and then applied clamps until resin was squishing out all around the edge. That is critical.

Taped up all the little holes that the previous idiot owner drilled through the hull and the are now full of resin and a bunch or glass between them and the wood. will trim everything up tomorrow, fill in the side pockets with foam filler and then replace the caps and glass them back in so they are sealed off. the side of the transom that is facing the inside of the boat will be glassed in with woven mat for strength and will be tied into the bottom hull with woven mat. Clamps will come off in the morning as the resin has already kicked. Little closer all the time.CF
