hunter they were in the shallows this weekend. we got 23 over 13in and prob 50 a day in bluestone fri and sat. Casting jigs in the main creek pockets is where most of the big ones were. Tried trolling with very little luck.

to consistently kill long birds you gota know the piece of property like the back of you hand & then get there early & follow the gobble- if he don't gobble then your chances go down till 9-10 am then listen hard again- if still no gobbles its like deer hunting got figure where they'r going to strut & be there & kill 'em - if they aint gobbling you can bet your A.... off they'r following hens & strutting- and will be on a pattern - it may differ a 100 yards a day but they will be at the same designation 8 days out 10- with that much new property get aerial photos & topo maps of the site ( just google it plenty of sources) I'd suggest looking for big timber areas on ridge tops or in swamp bottoms for roosting sites for am hunts & as day progress's move toward possible green fields for strut zones- big timber rider spots can be hot midday afternoon strut zones too- keep your eye out for droppimgs- if I don't find MOIST droppings where im hunting I keep moving- if you got 5000 ac new land sounds like you need a hunting partner or a survey or both!

I got plenty of open field close to swamp bottoms. I will check out how guest work on the land if your interested. Its in Sussex so thats a bit of a ride for you. Should I focus on untilled open field or where the winter wheat is coming up? I got one field that has lots of acorns and pecans on it. I am thinking they wouldnt be too far from that buffet. I have no clue what a turkeys "home" range is though
Thanks for the advice
I have good luck with birds on my old farm just have to learn this place.
open fields near swamp bottoms be good spot to start but be there early ( I mean dark) & listen then kill or follow- later in season hunt untilled fields as hens will be nesting there & gobblers cruising- you got much mast might be a honey hole this year if like it was round here- don't know what the biologist say but ive hunted particular gobblers that had a home range of little better than 1 sq mile ( bout 640 ac) but they'll have a pattern they follow nearly every day- yea Sussex outa my range- like to sleep in my own bed @ night, gett'n old! good luck!!
