    Default World Record Crappie ?

I missed the bash, this past weekend I attended the OrangeCounty High School Fishing Team’s 10th Annual Sportsmans Expo atOrange County High School. I was manning a table for Holiday Lake 4-H Centerpromoting the upcoming Fishing Camp and the Rod Building class. There was alocal taxidermist at the show with a huge crappie mount. When I asked him, hesaid it was a replica of the world record black crappie and weighed 7 pounds !!He had no idea where or when it was caught, just that “it’s on the internet “.I looked and looked and I could find no mention of a 7 pound world recordcrappie. Or a picture of one. The biggest verified I could find was 5 poundseven. I thought the IFGA record was still the Kerr caught 4 pound 8 oz. And theVirginia record is 4 pounds 10 oz. Here is what’s on the IFGA site-
    http://wrec.igfa.org/WRecordsList.aspx?lc=AllTackle&cn=Crappie,%20black
    VDGIF site- http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/fishing/trophy/staterecords.asp

Here are two pictures I took of the mount. It’s about 2 feetlong and very thick. Anybody else out there ever heard of this fish ? Seemslike some BS to me………………………If it’s the world record where’s the information ?Who caught it ? And where ?

Oh yeah, the Expo was great. The weather kept many vendorsand attendees away but this show was one of the best I’ve ever been to. BeckyGore and the Orange County High School Anglers are some of the finest outthere. Those young boys and girls were extremely polite, very well mannered andhelpful. Becky and the rest of her crew have done a fantastic job and put on awell organized, well run event. I’ll be back next year. Here is the flyer fromthis year-

I picked some baits at excellent prices and even won a nicebox of plastics as a doorprize.

Biggest "reported" Crappie, that I've ever heard of, is the 6lb Crappie listed as the state record for Louisiana (1969) http://landbigfish.com/staterecords/...tate=Louisiana (but it is not recognized by the IGFA)

That being said ... IGFA does not recognize "records" that are not filed with them. Currently the world record White Crappie is still 5lb 3oz from Enid Lake, Ms 1957 ... and the Black Crappie record is 5lbs from a private lake in Missouri 2006 (according to IGFA - http://wrec.igfa.org/WRecordsList.as...appie,%20black ).

The biggest problem I see with this replica mount ... is that it was produced with only measurements given by someone, and not an actual skin mount. I can give a taxidermist ANY set of measurements I want, and have them make a replica mount.

When Penny Hopper caught a 4lb 14oz Crappie here in KY ... it was touted as a possible world record Black Crappie. It was found to be a b/w hybrid cross, and therefore not admissible to IGFA as a record. It's measurements were 21.5" x 18" ... and is the current Ky State Record Crappie (Ky does not distinguish between species of Crappie)

You're right Bill .... there ain't near enough of them, either. That's another thing about fiberglass replicas ... you'd have to duplicate the markings off a picture, and be a good artist to capture the uniqueness of each fish's markings, otherwise you get a generic looking product like this one.

I'd take one look at that mount & decide right then & there that I'd never take my trophy sized Crappie to be mounted by them !!

My local taxidermist charges a flat $200 for a Crappie mount, plus cost for driftwood or panel backing ... but, for a 3lb or larger Crappie, I'd gladly pay it. These guys are some of the best in the world, having won many "best" awards in competitive shows. I've got a 7lb LMB & a 12lb Tiger Muskie hanging on my wall, that they did, and they still look like they could swim off if you put them back in the water. The Bass has been hanging since 1991 & the Muskie has been hanging since 1985 !!

    Another couple of observations :

The big mount doesn't have the correct number of dorsal spines to be a Black Crappie
and the White Crappie mount that's to the right of it, just above the trout, has bar markings that just don't look normal.
