Bear Creek Lake State Park
Took the kids camping last weekend. Took only 50 mins to get there from Richmond. I have never been, but I will go back. Very clean, and very nice. We swam, hiked and fished a little- only on foot. Caught 15-20 or so shellcrackers, bass, bream and crappie. We caught 8 crappie, with the biggest going 9". Has anyone fished this lake? I would guess its 40-50 acres. It seems very clean and my guess deep. I want to go back with a jon boat or canoe and explore. There is a nice boat ramp within the campground. I spoke with a guy who was wailing on fish with popping bugs in a kayak. He said he fishes the lake 8-10 times a year and it never gets choked with weeds in the summertime. He also mentioned that it is always good fishing and he confirmed there definitely are larger fish than the ones we were catching from shore.

Camped there @ 8 times over a 3-4yr period They used to rent paddleboats ( maybe johnboats too). Had some fun times there.. I swam my first "1 mile swim" in that lake.. Later that fall, they drained the lake down to do some work on dam, we walked lake shore pulling lures of stumps and brush.. I remember thinking I was glad I didn't bump into anything because I could have been hooked to underwater wood and drown. BTW, it was Z dam below Huguenot! ( don't remember ever catching them there after the one time)
