Default Chick Lake-Wind-small crappie and more wind.

The forecast was for NE winds 5-10 which held true for part of the morning but the afternoon had the winds gusting up to 24 and pretty steady 15-20. It was brutal as I could only find crappie in the wind, albeit, mostly small crappie. I don't fish Chick Lake much and this is the first time I caught so many 7"-8" crappie there. I only had one that went 1lb even and of the 67 I caught, maybe 5 were 11"+. I long lined open water and would still catch a 7" crappie. Not sure where the bigger ones were hiding.

I casted Kalins Money jig and their black/blue/chartresue jig which is identical to the Money jig is body style. Got a few on Kiwi BGBS. For vertical jigging they liked a solid chartreuse Wasshoppah tipped with a crappie nibble. Almost all crappie were caught 6' down in water 8'-9' deep with some caught a little shallower and only a couple deeper.

Water temp was 64. Did I mention the winds were brutal?

Thanks for the report Tap! Good to know there is good population of crappie, even if you only found small ones today. Today while I was laying on floor, contorting myself to fit into hatches, pulling wire and installing pump in bottom of my boat today, I could hear wind blowing. I remember thinking, bad as this job is,,, glad I'm not on water fishing..

Edit: ( that is, glad I got to fish earlier, when winds were not as bad)

Your right Tap the wind was brutal today Felt like it was blowing 45 to me .. Sensation of riding down 64 with my head out the window. Richard and I were just down the road. Don't think I have ever fish in wind as bad as today's. We had a super day of fishing. Richard will post later. He's a little distracted right now. Richard became a grandpa today.
Did I mention thanks for the report.

Thanks Tap...always enjoy your chick lake reports. Good numbers, but wonder if there is a wave of larger fish still finishing the spawn up in the creeks and not quite out on the main lake woodcover yet? That kind of wind is no fun.

A busy day fishing always beats sitting at home wishing you had gone! There was definitely a good bite in the windy locations, but we found them biting in the sheltered areas, too. When will spring ever get here?

At least you caught some with the wind. I am worried about the water temps continuing to fall myself???

They have been hard to find. Glad you found them, even if they were small.
