    Default Perch update

    Still good yesterday @ B-D!

Doodlum & I put 25 ringers in the box. Biggest 2 were 12" & we tossed lots of dinks. Crappie were scarce. Released this 14.5-incher

and kept 4 smaller ones. Greenies and pickerel bit aggressively along with a few CF and WP. It was a beautiful day on the water!

I've never caught a perch before thats pretty neat... That 14.5" crappie was a nice one maybe you will catch him when he becomes a citation! Nice report!

At the risk of sounding like a complete moron, are Perch good eating? I was under the impression they were boney and hard to clean. I have caught a few yellow and white perch in Northwest River and always thrown them back...........never even considered putting them on the stringer. I will say they were fun to catch on ultralight tackle!
    Thanks!

My wife and I do not like the taste of white perch, we found the yellow perch to taste almost identical to crappie but has a much firmer meat. I fillet them just the way I would a crappie.

Small ones are hard to clean & the yield is hardly worth the effort. When they reach 10", you end up with decent fillets. Both species are very tasty--fry them up!

    Hey Hatchetjack,

I fillet all my fish, even yellow and white perch = no bones.

If scaling, (my ole great aunt edith from down CF's way: Eden (ton) N.C.) always told me you have to pop the YP's back to make it easy to scale. Hold the head and the tail, pull in opposite directions until you hear the spine audibly "Pop". It does make them easier to scale. Just some ole' timers stuff.
