I was able to get this Friday off, Called in to work last Friday. Had to drop wife off at work 1st then off to Claytor lake got to launch in good time, went to raise motor to take motor toter off, battery dead????? Had been on charge all night????? I called Conrad's Marina they said they would jump me off, had to pay $5 to launch but got to use big motor. They got me started and let me borrow a battery in case it wouldn't start later. I have been trying to figure out the crappie on this lake all year, this is my first year spider rigging and have had limited success. The only way I have been able to catch crappie spider rigging on Claytor is over brush piles. I arrived at the 1st brush pile to find someone on it, no big deal community hole, so I went to an area I hadn't tried yet, I caught many Ky bass and a couple YP, trolled back toward the brush pile when I found another brush pile I had never fished, I caught 2 - 14.5" crappie, several more smaller crappie and many YP, started trolling back to brush pile found another brush pile, 3 more crappie and many more crappie. I was rigging with minnows on all 6 rods, brush piles were 12-16 FOW, I will be adding some more brush piles to this lake. I haven't been able to catch any crappie any other way on this lake lately.
I read the post about naming lakes, Claytor is so small that its' hard to keep anything a secret.
Thanks Aaron
good report
CRAPPIE fishing is not a sport, its a way of life!
Aaron, you must be fishing Peak Creek mostly. Are you local & have you fished Claytor much?
I fish Claytor but I mostly shoot docks & cast or jig brush piles.
I live close to Claytor but would rather fish SML for crappie.

Thanksfor the report. Sounds like a good day!
I live in Christiansburg, and have Fished Claytor most of my life. We use to fish for bass mostly and would crappie fish couple times a year. I started fishing in Dublin hollow, and worked back toward the State park. I have tried shooting docks and have caught some, I enjoy spider rigging and have tried to figure it out on Claytor. When I fished bass tournaments every weekend, I got to fish many lakes in VA, NC, and Tenn, now I want to try rigging some of the same lakes. I did get one trip to SML this year and did catch crappie and white pearch I think??
Good report did you have a dead cell in the battery?
mike (papermouth scaler)
it's cold.. it's raining....it's too windy...
"fish on!!!"
(What a great day for fishing) lol.
I don't think so, I left the light switch on all week no lights plugged in and charged the batteries over night before I left. I think the battery was dead and did not get charged enough?? I have charged the battery fully and will check better before I go this week??
