I drove an hour and a half to launch at the Swan Quarter end of the Rose Bay canal and then idled up the 7 mile canal, went under a bridge that was so low my bass boat steering wheel almost did not clear and then kept going until I burned half my gas out. Had to stop and go back. All I caught was a 4 inch crappie and some dink brim. I was looking for the way into the west side of Mattamuskeet Lake. I found out later that there was a dike in the way about another 1/4 mile further so I would not have made it anyway. That trip was a bust. I went back after I found out there was a ramp on the canal on the west end of the lake but I was bass fishing back in those days and didn't care for crappie. I need to go back because that is a good canal for crappie but not so much for bass.CF

Far enough. Went to Jackson River north of Hot Springs, Hidden Valley area. After going as far as possible by auto I hiked along the river. Snakes were present but caused no problem, chiggers and ticks were numerous and aggressive. Path was not good so I waded in the river. All for the chance to catch large trout. My efforts were rewarded by catching 1 small sunfish 1 sucker. The chiggers made sure I would long remember this trip.

When I lived in NM, would drive 118 m every Sat to fish due to desert.

Left Rudee in Feb, 20*, ran down to darn near Oregon Inlet, for only 1 28" striper. Broke ice both ways. It was cold and a long way!

Have been broadsided at 35+ mph, at midnight, by 23' boat while in 16' Alumacraft. Had to check if I was still alive. It was late Dec, and I was stripering in the ELizabeth. Had to lay side ways in boat and use back and feet to push side back out. Made it back to shore trembling. Couldn't stick around to get boat numbers-- didn't know if I was sinking! Dude didn't even see me, running lights and everything.
