I did the samething for the floor in my square back canoe, used 2x2 ribs. Has been flooded many times and still holds up. Used that cheap green plastic carpet to cover it. Home depot less than a buck a foot.

I saw one of our clients work boats today. They used 3/4'' marine plywood coated with two layers of the roll on bed liner coating with some coarse sand added. He said they are always hauling generators, coring machines and dive gear and the coating is holding up, makes for a good no slip surface and is easy to clean. Sounds like a good idea to me because I can mess up carpet real quick.
