Thread: Trolling Rods

how much weight are you using to tightline? how fast do you troll? Go to the bnm website and order a catalog, they have charts for weight and style of fishing to help you choose the right rod and sell replacement tips, I use 12' & 9' wallys, i love mine I use 1oz on the tightlines and 1/2oz on the crappie thunders, only drawback is no replacements for WM rods

I have found when tightlining that if I'm missing alot of fish for whatever reason, I put the tightline rods up, I slow the boat down and fish with a small cork/ split shot and tightline with 2 big split shots and cast. Only thing affected is the amount of water I cover. Which most of the time I dont need to cover alot of water anyways. PercP gives good advice.

I use WM tight lines and love them. I catch a lot of fish with them and I think they are just right as far as the stiffness goes.I tight line using a 1/2 oz sinker and it works just fine. I think you need a little back bone when tight lining.

I use WM crappie thunder 2- 10'footers 1/2oz sinkers, and 2x16footers B&M pst and 2 x 9 footers shakespear crappie hunters. Love the B&M's and the WM.s the shakespears are pretty good for longlining they are made with IM7 graphite. Trying to get 6 more 16ft's if I can find them on here for sale but will start buying them a little at a time from Grizzly Jig Co. as I get the money.I fish 8 rods longlining and 8 spider rigging but not at the same time cause I fish by myself most of the time,so hope to get 6 more B&M pst163 buy the spring this coming year. Have learned a lot from these guys on here from VA area and the CC members as a whole. Real good people that will tell you the truth about your equipment and how to catch fish, and it helps to live close to the VA crappie fishermen also. Glad to be apart of this forum,hope this helps.

If You want lighter poles, then the BnM BGJP rods lighter. they are too light for me. I prefer the Pro staff trollers but they are comparable to WM tightline specials.CF

Thanks for the info and responses. I usually fish pretty shallow 10' or less and use maybe 3/4 oz max, but that may need to be studied a little closer as well since I may tightline 5 times per spring. How many of you all use a double rig when tightlining? Seems to me it would be a mess with the net, but you can give more combination of lures and depth, so that is a good thing. Keep the info coming and hope to be able to make some reports once deer season is over.

i use a single jig or gold aberdeen hook below my weight... i hate fouled lures so i only use one per rod

I used to use a double rig but it got to be too much trouble for a slightly greater catch rate. I just use a single jig these days.

If you want something a little less stiff than the Titeline Specials, look at the Signature Series. Titelines are good for 2-3 ounces of weight (I use 2 ounces) and SS are good for about 1 ounce of weight. BnM ProStaff Trollers is another good choice.
