Hi revitup, I live in Austin area and call Granger my home lake. We have three local guides on the lake and would recommend any one of them. (PM me for links to their web sites.) I have fished Granger and LBJ for crappie and both are good crappie lake. LBJ however is a busy recreational lake during summer and warm weather weekends. Can make fishing tough. Granger has two nice RV areas and swimming beaches, but not much else for kids to do. With that said, kayaking up Willis Creek is a lot of fun. If you stay at Granger, I would recommend Fox Park. Has a fishing pier and cleaning station. Granger is about 30 min from Austin and you can get to the tollways which can get you almost anywhere. Check out www.GrangerGang.com. Not a busy web sight, but Granger specific.
Keep in mind that Lake Travis is about 50+ feet low so access to water can be difficult and rush hour traffic can be a problem.
A lot of people have mentioned a lot of things to do, so I want duplicate. If you are out to try BBQ, Lockhart TX has three BBQ joints that are always brought up when BBQ is discussed in TX. Taylor TX, near Granger Lake, has award winning Louie Mueller's BBQ. Home of the 1lb beef ribs. Lake Austin and Lady Bird Lakes downtown are nice and would recommend for recreation type activities. Lot of kayaking and SUP available there.
PM me if you have any specific questions. Would be glad to answer. Maybe we can even hookup for a day on the water.
