I went yesterday and no crappie was home, just yellow bellies and catfish... Up until about June, we were fishing pines a lot for catfish. When the wind blows from the south into hurricane creek, the it creates a big mud line. When the wind is coming up of the north, we'd fish around watts island.. We would take 16-20' BNM telescoping rods, #4 treble , catfish Charlie and a cork any where from 12"-36", no weight because the Charlie is heavy.. We would absolutely smoke the fish. It's nothing to go catch 75 fish in 3 hours fishing like that. We wade or just walk down the bank. The windier, the better. I started fishing at Fork like that, in mid July, and I really don't have any desire to catfish pines anymore. I love catching those 3-7lbs channels on those long poles... And fork is the place. Pines is loaded to the gills with 12-14" fish, perfect eating size... But every angler is always looking for the bigger bite... You could go out in front of pops landing or alley creek with some mays and catch all you want... As long as the wind is blowing hard enough to mud the bank, you can catch them like that all year around.
