Actually it does make a bit of difference, unless you're fishing kinda deep. It may also make a difference in how far back from your boat's bow you have your rod holders. Your trolling motor also comes into play with how/where you mount the rod holders, and even (in some cases) which brand/style rod holders you have (or intend to buy).

I don't actually "Spider Rig" ... but I do "Push" .... and I use 13' & 14' rods. I "tried" Spider Rigging (back seat of buddy's boat) with 10' rods and found them to be a bit "stiff" for light biting fish, so when I decided to get long rods for use in my own boat I went straight to 14' rods.

I have - one 14' BnM PST - two 14' Capps/Coleman - and two 13' BPS Uncle Buck's collapsible rods. All have line counter reels on them. If I was to go to Spider Rigging ... I'd use the Capps/Coleman rods & the BPS rods, just for more sensitivity (more limber tips) on light biters.

I use Hi-Tek Stuff rod holders, and mounted the one on the trolling motor side just a hair more forward & "inside" the gunnel than the one on the right side, so that I can deploy or pull the trolling motor in without having to remove the T-bar. (as shown in pic)
