Default Showing a friend the ropes on Percy Priest

I don't like taking others out on my boat when I'm trying new techniques. I like to be fairly confident in getting some catches first. So after some success pulling cranks, I took a friend who doesn't get to fish very often. We pulled in 5 in 3 hours, all keepers, and he got the two biggest. Tops was a 14 inch white crappie, my buddy's first TARP fish. He says he'll pay me back this fall with a dove hunt. Good deal!

I was running Bandit 300s, Arkie 350s, and Picos. All caught fish. 4 of the 5 fish came on blue colored baits. We were also out at 6:00am and didn't get one for the first hour. Is it possible to be too early?Name: 7880.jpeg

Well done! If you were fishing deep, you may have been under them at first light.?

I hadn't thought of that. Seems more likely than the fish still sleeping Showing a friend the ropes on Percy Priest

I've heard one of my buds, that likes to Push jigs & cranks, say that he finds them shallow in the early part of the day & closer to shore ... but, when the Sun gets up they start moving out to the flats & channel edges in deeper water. Now, that "deeper water" may only be a few feet deeper than what they were in overnight, or it could be a lot deeper ... but, they're still going to have to stay above the thermocline.

I surmise that the Crappie are simply "keeping in touch" with the forage fish, in our case the Gizzard & Threadfin Shad, and they migrate to the shallows at night & then back out into the open water during the heat of the day with the Crappie staying in pursuit.
Seems to work that way for me, as well, since most of the early morning fish that I've caught were hanging around cover close to the bank while the shade was over the water ... but, move out once the Sun starts shining on those areas.
