Finally, the weather is improving and the fish are starting to do their business on the Big Indian! A snow and two big frosts this week are still holding some fish out deep but favorable winds and abundant sunshine is warming the shallows fast. I fished 4 hours this morning and committed to beating the bushes in search of some dudes and chicks dressed up their breeding best. Arrived at the lake and a 200+ Green Carp tournament had 3 major mid lake ramps snarled and I ended up launching 45 minutes later than planned and in an area of the lake I do not normally fish. No problem, I just searched out visible brush in the back parts of what appeared to be protected spawning coves and was quickly rewarded with a nice breeding pair. The bite was no means great but the search for a nice mess was certainly fun. Yes I decorated several brushpiles with my jigs but if you are not getting snagged occasionally you are not fishing in the right spots on Cherokee when they are nesting. I had to leave before noon in order to make a prior commitment but 6 pretty Crappie came home for a photo opportunity.

Breeding male and female Black Crappie.

Breeding Male White Crappie. It should just get better this week. Get out there and drop a jig in a brush pile and hang on!

Great report! Glad you found some shallow. I’m still searching, but getting some deep ones.
