    Default Cold Falling Water=Slow Down!

Someone once said that weather-wise, March is a month of considerable frustration....I agree. Here is a picture from my back yard on Wednesday.

Almost 3 inches snow. Pulled out the the spider rig poles and headed to the Big Indian on a chilly St. Patrick’s Day morning with nothing to lose but a couple dozen minnows and time. Got to the public ramp a little after daylight and no one had launched yet? Uh oh, I must have missed the memo. Two guys were suiting up and said they managed two keeper Crappie all day on Friday and were going to try the Green Carp. At least I would not have much early company. Arrived at first spot and water temps were in the upper 40’s, not good considering I had experienced 60 degree water temps during the February monsoons, and to make matters worse the water had fell about 4 feet. I decided to back out in 20-22ft water and look for pre-spawn fish with the spider poles. Fishing about 14ft at about .5mph I soon connected with a 12in White Crappie. The bite was extremely light, and I didn’t get bit again for 20 minutes at least, then it was a small white bass. Decided to slow down, to at least .3mph and intently bird dog those rod tips. That made all the difference. Light bites and a slight ripple on the water, I managed a nice mess of exceptional sized fish. No one under 11.5 inches rode home with me and the counter said 9 when I left.

?The fish were very thick and healthy with the females full of light colored egg sacs. If you are experiencing these crazy Spring weather conditions, try slowing down. It worked for me.
