Thread: Douglas Report 10/20

Was down with the family in the area over fall break and brought my boat. Had planned on night-time bassin' but the front coming through that night changed my plans so my 12 year old and I wend Thursday day instead. Got there about noon and fished till dark. Attempted some bass first but not a bump anywhere. I'm much better at bassin than catching crappie but I’m enjoying the crappie fishing when we go more and more. Have never fished Douglas for crappie so going in completelyblind.

Lake as down with virtually no cover in sight so we attempted to troll some cranks thinking we might get lucky with the crappie. Was marking a lot of fish but only had one dink that way. Finally ran in the back of Maguire creek and there is oneslide in the back with 4 or 5 decent sized trees in 8’ of water. We didn’t haveany live bait as I figured trolling would be the deal so I rigged up a jig witha blk/chart garland grub under a float with a nibble. I’ve never had any luckdoing this but first cast, had a bite and missed. Cast again and caught akeeper. Tied up to that tree and managed maybe 8 with 3 keepers on that spot. Someunder that float and some swimming a grub. Left and tried some other areas withzero success. Ended up deciding to come back to that spot before dark and tiedup again. Found one specific small area they were grouped and caught maybe12-13 more and ended up with 10 keepers total. Just enough for lunch the nextday at the cabin for the family. Mostcame fishing a grub tight to cover on a weedless head but some came on thatbobber. I think we could have managed more if we had minnows but it was a lot offun catching them on all artificials. Wish I had would have known where I couldhave found more cover but I just lucked on that spot and didn’t see any more. Itried some of the banks in the area with zero luck fishing the same method soit was very spot specific. Sorry, I don’t have any pics. I had nothing biggerthan 12” but they were mostly decent 11” keepers.
