    Default Big Sandy Ramp Question

    Hello All,

Im new to this forum and crappie fishing (trout fishing has been my thing, but none to be found within an hour of Clarksville so Im having to adjust). I wanted to try out the Big Sandy Area this weekend and wanted to know what ramp(s) you might suggest as a starting point. I have a 16' Gheenoe (think large stable canoe) and 10hp motor so I cant really put in and travel 5-10 miles up and down lake efficiently. Im looking for a concrete ramp fairly close to some catchable fish for this time of year. I went to Panther Bay last weekend and caught 1 13"+ White on a minnow and had a great time. They seemed to be in 12-15' of water up there. Any suggestions? Also, I have a question about spider rigging. What is the trick to keeping your line down in the water on a windy day while using the wind to move you around? My slip float seems to always be about 2' from the float stopper.

    Thanks

I would suggest Port Rd. Ramp. If you stay back in the cove you should be ok in a small boat as long as you don't go out in the main channel. If wind is coming from the south or north the main channel gets rough fast.
To get there take Hwy. 79 to E. Antioch Rd. And take it to Port Rd. On your left, just past VFW hall. Keep to your left on Port Rd. To the ramp.
Good luck and welcome to the site.

There's a lot of structure throughout that whole cove, so you should have plenty spots to choose from. That ramp is a good one and easy to launch and load from. We were catching ours Saturday in 10 - 12 fow. Try ditching the float, tie on an egg sinker and tight line your minnow or jig.

I'll be making the trip there from Clarksville Saturday morning to the ramp. Your Welcome to meet up and follow. I'll be leaving Clarksville around 5:00 am with a stop at Papa Rock for minnows. Wind is looking good for Saturday so you should be able to hit some good spots in the BIG Water. Shoot me an email to meet up and your welcome to come by and check my rig and setup since you live in Clarksville.
    That's a KEEPER!

Thanks for the egg sinker suggestion. I picked up some of those at Wal-Mart today.

Is the ramp you all are suggesting the one called Mansard Island Marina? How much does it cost?

No,it's not mansard, the ramp they are telling you about is usually called port. It is a state ramp and is free. Off of Hwy 79 turn on to east antioch rd. then stay on that about 4 mi. until you see the amvette club on the left and turn left right beside it and just stay straight,it will run right into the ramp. There is one fork on that road just keep left.
