Wink got a question out there for ya

What is really the difference between trolling and spider rigging? besides spider rigging is at the front of the boat and trolling you have the poles off the rear of the boat.
Thanks for any insight about it.

    spider rigging = pushing
    long lining = pulling...
type in those 2 terms in the search box and you will be a pro at both about this time tomorrow:D

To me, the biggest difference is that when trolling, you are constantly moving, covering a larger area. Some folks do the same thing with poles rigged out the front of the boat, with heavy weights, but when I spider rig, the boat is more stationary, suspending the baits above structure. Most of the moving is only from one brush pile to another.

thanks for the info kevin and speck tackler. I been reading and it sounds like it would be fun to learn how to fish that way. So when I get back I'm gonna have to try it next year. I got to get this deployment over with first lol.

Thanks for your service!!! Make short work of it and get back home. We'll have to get together and do some fishing when you get back.

    Speck tackler,
Sounds good to me. I plan on doing a lot of fish when I get back. In my down time I'm gonna be tying flies and getting stocked up on my flies LOL. So I'll be ready

Thanks for you service, be safe.

To you question, IMHO the difference is speed. Spidering is a crawl at most. Trolling is typically 0.8-1.2mph when trolling jigs and up to +/-2.2mph when trolling hard baits. Spidering is fun when the wind is not too strong as location specific boat control is essential. Trolling can be done in as high of winds as you can stand.
