Thread: Perch?

Keep in mind that the White Perch is not a perch at all, but a member of the same family as the Striped Bass and White Bass. In it's natural habitat it closely mimics the Striper in that it is anadromous and comes into fresh water estuaries to spawn. This is a popular fishery in coastal NC and Virginia when they make spawning runs.
Like the Striper it has flourished in fresh water reservoirs and threatens Crappie and White Bass populations because they multiply rapidly and feed on fry of other game fish.
They largely accounted for the demise of the White Bass fishery in the Santee Cooper lakes and most likely others as well.
If big enough to fillet, they are good table fare but the skin and any red line needs to removed to avoid a fishy taste.
It's that big enough part that's the problem. Most schools run similar in size and there are a blue million of 5 to 8 inches ones everywhere.
12" fish are decent size and should make for a good dinner.
