We found all of ours on Saturday on channel ledges or drop offs. 90% of ours came in 18-25'. If you are taking the kids, be sure to bring a fish towel to grab your fish with. The fins on the gills will get ya every time.
Minnows work best for bait for us, but I like to use little pieces of cut perch. It seems to stay on longer. Good luck, hope the kids have a blast.

I totally agree that down scan helps a ton to find them. It really helps me distinguish them from bait, because perch and shad often look similar on traditional sonar. usually they are right on the bottom but if you ever see a "Christmas tree" of them coming up off the bottom you have found the mother load. I went to Greenwood Saturday afternoon and we caught 70 to 80 before dark on little 1/4 oz jigging spoons on ultralight spin. It was a lot of fun.
