Thread: Hartwell

Fished a bass tournament on 2/03 out of portmans. We hit the tugaloo area most all day. Marked several schools of what we assumed were crappie in 25-35' , in some creek ditches. Anyone been to Hartwell lately? Little closer lake for me to fish, since i am in WNC. Any tips on where to find them? I plan to go back soon and crappie fish those areas we found, but would love to have some better insight from the "pros" on here.

Because this is not a fishing report and more of a statement (per rules).
You will get better response here on the open forum on questions and you may get some PM's from members not wanting to say openly what they are finding.

To answer your first question, tight lining minnows, or minnow tipped jigs at, or just above the fish will be the best plan of attack. Use a multiple rod spread to offer baits at different depths, and different color combinations.

ok thanks, i had assumed that since i gave a creek area, specific depths and types of locations of what i assumed were crappie, it was more of a report. But , i understand, and thanks for the explanation.

As for the moderated forum, i am familiar with whats required to post in it and i did read the rules.

I appreciate the tips on how to fish the rigs. Those are the types of spreads i typically use. I was more looking for the type of areas anyone had been locating crappie schools on Hartwell. As i only assumed what we found were crappie. I will try to get down and verify soon. Rain this weekend, so maybe next wkd ill head down and give it a shot.

Perch will stage in big schools and look a lot like Crappie but it is hard to tell on the df. Jigging a spoon in that group of fish is about the fastest way I have found to check what species they are ( if biting)
With the clear water on that part of the lake it is hard to pinpoint Crappie staging but have been hearing that good Crappie are being caught off channel flats and deeper brush.
Hope you get on them. Not sure what two days of rain will do to the fish but stained water is great at holding Crappie and mud lines are a good place to fish.

You just don't see a lot of postings about crappie from Hartwell lake on these boards. Not sure why unless it is just not fished that much for crappie from members here on the boards that are willing to share information. With Lake Russell so closeby and Clark Hill not too far away those lakes get fished for crappie a lot more IMO. Atleast the reports are much more abundant from there. Good luck with your trips to Hartwell and look forwards to reading your reports.

Thanks again. Rain didnt allow me to get out. I dont really care to fish in a monsoon. lol. Heading to Texas this weekend for Aoudad hunt. Weather permitting, i will be out fishing wkd of the 24th. Ill post a report after.
