These come with a stainless cable to hook a block to and also the slabs are so thick doesn't matter if it's lays on side. And yes you can build your own cheaper but if you don't use the right stuff all your doing is adding rust to the water with screws holding the arms in place. But to each there own these are what I use my self best money I've spent
