Beats me. I fished for 6 hours today on Lake Murray and caught 1 throw back Crappie and 1 big ole Gar.
I fished shoreline brush/trees, long lined , and tried tight lined Minnows. GREAT DAY but poor results.

Do Crappie still spawn in shallow water? For many years I caught a lot of Crappie around docks on Lake Greenwood, willow trees, button bushes and lay down pine tree's on Lake Murray and Clark's Hill. I haven't caught them in shallow water lately. Where do they spawn now?

I fished today for a little bit. We caught 1 shallow with minnow under a bobber. The other was in about 10fow when the sun was bright. My brother stayed latter and fished a channel drop off late afternoon and caught 20 same technique.

I was able to fish yesterday and found some small crappie on the banks. Had to use a small jig and small cork throwing to the bank and reeling back slowly. Never found any keepers on the bank and caught all my crappie spider rigging in 10 to 15' zone with one every once in awhile in the 5 to 10 zone.

Do crappie spawn early?!? IMO....yes! BUT....this year the weather jumped from winter to summer warming the water to the spawning temps in the shallows WAY before the fish (and their eggs) were ready. With unseasonably warmer weather this spring the shallow waters continued warming until they became warmer than the fish wanted so this year they spawned in deeper waters. I don't know CRAP.....but that's my theory and I'm sticking to it.![]()
That's about as good a theory a any they either here or there, maybe up or down. Clear as mud
