    Default Don warned me

My mentor told me that one day a striper or cat would attack me.

I thought I was hung up but when I grabbed the pole the line took off across three other lines while peeling line off the reel. He wrapped up around another lure and snatched that rod and reel out of the boat. About 15 minutes later I was able to get him in the boat where he proceeded to throw gear everywhere making a horrible tangled mess. In my mercy I let this spawn of the devil live to fight another day. 28 inches I'm guessing 8 to 9 pounds. All told I lost about an hour of fishing time.

That was just the start of things to come. Are you catching any crappie. Haven't seen any posts in a while. If the river split is slow try going up past the dnr landing all the way to the power line and try up there. It is time to try some shallow water. Just go to 1/16 or 1/32 jigs and target shallow water 10 ft or less. Don

Welcome to the club. Wait till you see what a Gar can do when you add all those teeth to the mix. Butch is the record holder in Gar avoidance. He can break one off in less than 10 seconds.

I worked down the Reedy and caught a couple of hens full of eggs; I lost an hour dealing with the monstrosity. Last Monday Bijhy limited out at the confluence and I caught 8. The confluence was like a ghost town both in fish and fishermen. Switched to 1/32 and worked my way back up in less than 8 FOW. Caught a few more and some bream. Scouted up river from Riverfork Landing, decided to beat the Friday Greenville rush hour and pulled out. Talked to a very nice couple at the landing who had limited out. He had fished way up river throwing minners to the bank. He said if you threw up on the bank and pulled it back to the water you were fishing too deep. Apparently in just 4 days the crappie went from 17 to 20 FOW to on the beds. I continue to learn; unfortunately the hard way.

Edit: Water temp was 65.5 when I left. Up river was heavily stained. Lake was up about a foot from Monday to Friday.

Rooster, your post are always good for a laugh and a smile. Cats (thugs), and striper can be a lot of fun on long rods but they can play hell running through your setup. I don't let the cats in the boat, long pair of pliers and a quick yank and they're on their way. Keep at it, the lessons learned each day can't be taken away.

By the way, did you get your rod and reel back?

Nope. It didn't just sink, he took it and ran with it half way up the Reedy; it looked like a scene from Jaws. 8 foot Southern Crappie Rod and a new Diawa Sweepfire.

That is why all my reels sit behind the forks in my holders. Donated two to the lake. Not donating any more unless they take the holder too.
