I've seen good results from both motors over the years, that said I'll never buy anything but a 4 stroke from now on. I also don't care much for buying newly designed motors unless they have a long warranty. my 2 cents.

I personally don't have any experience with the new Honda motors but I have an 1999 Honda 90 on my pontoon and it is reliable and cranks every time. The only draw back it is a gas hog. So far as the Mercury motor I would probably buy it over the Honda. I just put a used 2007 150 on my tracker and I absolutely love it. Cranks as soon as you turn the key and pushes my boat around 50 to 55. They all are good motors and I don't think you will go wrong with what ever you decide to buy. Definitely go with 4 stroke.
Might want to throw Suzuki in the mix. From what I read around the forum it is a really reliable motor. That said I have a Yamaha 2 stroke. If I could afford it I would get a new 4 stroke of some make.

Those Hondas are pretty awesome. Seen a few run perfect for years. I have had merc 2 strokes my whole life but my buddy bought a 115 4s Merc last summer. Loves it.
I have owned numerous Mercs and a couple of Honda's over the years. I've had good results with both. I am extremely hard on my equipment. Im back with a Merc now as the dealer I bought my last boat from did not carry Honda. The motor performs well, but if I had to do it again, a Honda would be strapped on the back of my boat. I think they are the best, most dependable, most reliable outboards made. If Honda has its name stamped on it, being a generator, lawn mower, car, or outboard motor you can be assured it is a high quality product. Nobody has been building four stroke outboards longer either.

Actually , I forgot that Ive had a Honda 1000 genny for many years. That thing is beautiful! Barely hear it running when night fishing under a bridge for Crappie. That's one thing I'm pretty good at.![]()
can't speak about the Honda other than I've heard good things.
My Merc is a 2003 90 4 stroke very hard starting cold it has a fuel enricher rathe than a choke, once the contact hits 70% it stops giving more fuel, which is OK if it stays running, if it's like mine it starts and stops 4-5 times before it keeps running, in real cold weather the enricher stops before it's warm enough.
I Had a Eventide with the same problem, she system, going Yammy or Honda when I'm forced into a new motor
For what's worth
I have owned bout every kind of out board they make. Except Honda. But since I put the Suzuki on my old tub. Aint no question what my next one , if ever needed will be. It dont like gas and gotta keep checkin the pee hole to see if it is running sometimes. Cranks first time everytime warm or cold. But for sure go four stroke !
You do have a good motor.
Heck I may build my own!
