I have owned both. I currently have a 90 Honda. I hate Mercs, but love my Honda. Most dependable Engine I have ever owned. My 2 cents.

I've had really bad experiences with newly designed stuff. The "new and improved product" and it's possible problems are still yours after the warranty runs out.

Had them all. Both Honda and Merc did well for me. The honda was a little older. I now have a 140 suz and love it. Bought it over a yamaha because it was cheaper, twice the warr, and they make a 140 which is the 115 block bored out with different gears. Love it so far.

Personal preference, I would go Yamaha then Honda. The Merc is a tihatsu motor.
I'll say one thing about Hondas. I live 3 miles from Kentucky Lake and 99% of the commercial boats around here have Hondas. That says a lot to me. I am still running a 30yr old Evinrude though.

I 2nd what striperking said
Base your decision on this: will the local shop work on them? I know some shops wont touch hondas, yamahas, zukis, mercs ect ect.

Thanks Pete,
There's one Honda dealership very close by,
Yamaha dealers everywhere
Personally I hate using dealers but while it's under warranty it's good
