I have experienced the sporadic currents as well on Santee. This is my thoughts as to why this occurs. When the dam releases water, the water moves in the direction of the dam. This movement is obvious to all. If a sustained blustery wind blows in another direction for any length of time the water will also move in that direction. As the wind continues to blow in that same direction, water piles up in the coves and banks but has nowhere to go. So it flows back towards the direction the wind is blowing. This gives you three different water movements at the same time making boat control quite difficult.
