Default 6-26-16 Monticello report & question

Finally got back down to Monticello. The wind was so hard that I had out 3 drift socks but was still moving too fast. We did catch a couple drifting but most of our fish came on cut bait fishing on the bottom in 60 to 80'. All were small but just right for eating. We ended up with 72 blues.

Ever where we set up, the current kept changing directions about every 5 to 10 minutes. We had on 2 oz weights but the lines kept moving all around. I have never seen the current keep changing so much. It did this all morning.

Any ideas what was going now?

I have experienced the sporadic currents as well on Santee. This is my thoughts as to why this occurs. When the dam releases water, the water moves in the direction of the dam. This movement is obvious to all. If a sustained blustery wind blows in another direction for any length of time the water will also move in that direction. As the wind continues to blow in that same direction, water piles up in the coves and banks but has nowhere to go. So it flows back towards the direction the wind is blowing. This gives you three different water movements at the same time making boat control quite difficult.

Monticello is west of winnsboro, sc & just to the west of hwy 215 before you get to Jenkinsville, SC. The lake is really a holding pond for VC Summer Nuclear Station. Normally, they pull water out of the lake during the day to make power(cooling water for the plant) & pump water back at night to refill the lake. The pump back water comes out of Parr reservoir. No cooling towers.

Very quite lake where no jet skies are allowed.

    Great cat fishing lake!
