Either have a jig tied on, or a hook, split shot and minnow attached. Stick the rod about half way in the water and ease it under the dock and slowly swim it back and forth. I like to keep the line near the reel draped over my index finger to aide in feeling the bites, but its not necessary if it's not comfortable for you. No hook set is really needed.
