My buddy Jeff and I had planned to fish Murray today for shell crackers but were concerned about the wind forecast. Discretion, they say, is the better part of valor, and being deficient in the valor department, we drove to the other side of the lake and put in at the back of the creek where we planned to fish.(Bear Creek) We put in at Eptings Landing for the manly sum of a $3 ramp fee and Eptings is like going back in time to the 50s and 60s. When I fished Bass Tournaments in the 70s we sometimes launched there and it looks just like it did then.
So we ran out to a couple of points that had been good in the spring and anchored and put out worms on the bottom. It was slow for awhile and we moved once but finally started picking up one now and then. The wind steadily increased as the morning wore on and I was glad I made the drive in the car and not the boat.
We ended up keeping 27 of a mixed bag. We had 3 or 4 Channel Cats that went about 2 Lbs. (good eating size) and the remainder a mix of shell crackers and white perch.(yes, they found us after a while and we kept some of the larger ones for a fish fry Jeff had planned for Sunday night.
These are a couple of the shell crackers
Here is Butch's live well shot and his and Ink's favorite dead perch floating on top.
