    Default Report:Perch revisited

I had not been perch jerking in quite some time, so when my golf buddy, Jeff, asked me to go this morning I jumped at the chance. Jeff prefers jigging spoons over live bait so we planned to vertical jig over schools if we could find some.
I tied up a two jig rig with a weight on the bottom and used it instead of the spoon.
I had a Rooty Tooty 309 on the top loop and a Shad Dart that I forgot I had on the bottom. I think Ronnie(Stumphunter) had given it to me and it looked so good I wondered why I had not used it before, except that I forgot I had it. It was green and black with a chartreuse tail. Notice I said "had".
Both jigs produced about equally and we kept about 12 to 15 nice perch and threw back several small ones. We did keep some of the really small ones and put them on catfish rigs but nothing doing on the Cats today.
Reason I said had was that I got a really hard bite and when I pulled in a nice perch the top jig was the only one left on the line. We think I had two hit at once and the line broke between the two jigs.
This one came on the RT309.

This one came on the Dart before it departed. Ronnie, if you recognize it as one of yours I like a dozen if you have then tied up. Also got to restock my RT309s. Got a couple of friends who want some.

The wind blew all morning, making the weather pleasant, but a pain for Jeff to hold the boat in place. We quit at noon and Jeff had a nice mess to add to a fish fry for his Church group later in the week.
    Water Temp was 82 degrees.
We put in at Shull Island and fished the river edges in 30 FOW at the mouth of Hollow Creek and Bear Creek.

Ray glad y'all had a great time and caught some fish. I'm sure StumpHunter will fix you up with more jigs. I plan on going sunday morning if we don't have really bad storms tomorrow. I'll probably let out at Siesta Cove because I like the fact someone is always there and your vehicle will not get broken into.

Glad to see you commented Mark. I was about to think I had been black balled for posting a perch report.

Norm Swalgreen is a golf buddy of mine. He owns Siesta Cove. I probably should use him, I usually just put in at the public landing. I had talked to Norm about leaving my boat at his place when I had to move it from the house, but I found and enclosed garage with electricity so I went with that. Actually a lot easier to deal with than having to cover and uncover and take stuff on and off.

By the way we saw some Striper activity on the surface and Jeff caught 3 on his Flexit spoon. We could not remember when the size limit changed so he released them. They were around 18". Looked it up when I got home and they were legal to keep through the end of September.

    Good luck Sunday.

LOL!! I wouldn't let that happen to you Ray. I like Siesta Cove they are good people plus my buddy lives right around the corner which I could leave the boat at his dock. I think a yearly pass is $50 which is not bad and that includes use of the pool.

So for the stripers you have to keep the 1st five fish? Or is the size limit 18"? Thanks

But hey if the perch want to bite I will not complain.

It is the first 5 you catch regardless of size until end of Sept., then it goes to size limit, which is 21" not 18".

    From DNR website:

On Lake Murray and the middle reach of the Saluda River it is unlawful to possess more than five striped bass a day. From June 1st through September 30th, it is unlawful to take, attempt to take, or possess more than five striped bass a day. On Lake Murray and the middle reach of the Saluda River from October 1st through May 31st, it is unlawful to possess a striped bass less than 21 inches in total length. From June 1st to September 30th there is no minimum length.

I'm glad you found a few perch willing to take your offerings Ray. Tommys heading toward Tennessee at the end of the week to prepare for the Crappie Masters Classic on Kentucky lake. I'm certain he would be more than willing to assist you with the Rooty Tooty's when he returns. Thanks to you and Jeff for the report and pics.
