    Default Gar on Wateree

Has there been an explosion of gar or something on Wateree? I fished a place that's been in my family for 60+ years...I've fished it my whole life and so has my dad and neither of us have seen gar there. Yesterday I fished and there were a ton that would break the surface and were running in the weeds after something to eat...they'd rip my live bait off the hook too...

Sounds like it's time to break out the rope lure and thin the herd a little.

I've seen the Gar like that before at Wateree, they up in the shallows spawning. You have just missed it. The first time I thought it was crappie because I've seen them right at the very edge doing the same thing there also...

I have caught 3 up in Cedar Creek this year while catfishing. They were all good size and aggressive.

Gar, like other fish species change there feeding and spawning locations based on forage, water conditions, and habitate. Gar are prehistoric animals that have been around forever due to their ability to survive regardless of what nature throws at them. Fear not, I've slayed the crappie right in the midst of thousands of surfacing gar on many of occassion. Though aggravating at times, no adverse effects to fish populations.
