On Zebco 33's I always spooled with 10 or 12# trilene line (cant remember its been so long). Before spooling with new line I'd recommend disassembling the reel, clean, re-lube, and check for any marks on the spool that can catch the line when casting. Might have to sand it a bit to smooth it back up. Then they should work good as new.
