There is a Bounty Land Exxon on Hwy 11 at Chickasaw Point that sells bait, if they are going that way to get to the lake. It's close to the Chickasaw Point golf course and also close to Port Bass.

Only time I fished Hartwell a friend who has a cabin there fished for Hybrids. We caught herring under lights with a Sabiki rig but they can buy herring instead. He fished at night and would anchor over an underwater island 35 ft. deep surrounded my deeper water up to 70 or 80 feet. He just fished the herring live on a slip sinker down on the hump. We did pretty good doing that.
You might caution your friends about the fish advisories on eating fish out of Hartwell. Ever since Sangamo Elec dumped all the PCBs in the lake years ago, there have been warnings about eating fish. Each year the danger lessens as silt covers up the chemicals, but still good to check before eating. Here is the latest info and Hartwell is on page 13. http://www.scdhec.gov/library/ml-004042.pdf

if you take exit 11, hwy 24 and go towards Anderson about a half mile on the left is the Bait Shop. They have herring, gizzard shad, trout, and minnows as well as some tackle.
