The 18's aren't that bad. It's a lil harder to judge how much line to leave out to swing the fish in at first but you get the hang of it. I am switching to all 12's instead of tens for the middle ten rods. If I am doing really well, I will put the 18's away and fish with just twelve or ten rods when I'm by myself. If I have a partner, he's in back with 6-8 rods and I'm up front with 6-8 rods depending on how deep I'm fishing. I will use 2 tens, 14s, 16s as down lines, and 18s. I will add a swivel and 1/2Oz egg sinker 4-6 feet in front of jigs. Keeps them away from the 14 and 18 and not much line out either. More like pushing but rods are out to the side. Catch some big fish on them usually. Really depends on the skill of my partner which usually isn't very good. I like taking novice anglers out and putting them to the test with 6-8 rods. Comic relief most of the time but keeps me busy. They reel one in and throw the fish and pole at me so they can reel in another. Back of the boat catches more most of the time but I catch bigger from the front.

How much line are you all letting out ?
CK taught me 60' and that's what I'm doing but just curious

There is no right answer here. Many variables come into play. It all depends on how deep, or how shallow you want your baits to run. Jig weight or split shot is but one way to control depth, boat speed is another, length of line cast out is another variable to depth control, along with line diameter. These variables are the reason you can get by using 1/16 ounce jigs the vast majority of the time. You want your baits to run deeper, let more line out and go slower. Still not deep enough, add a split shot. Just the opposite when fishing shallow water. Short lines and faster speeds. Not shallow enough, go to heavier line or switch to 1/32 jigs.

About the same. I've always looked at it this way. A school of fish is never just at one depth. Usually a school will cover 3-5ft if in water 10fow+. Therefore I don't want all my jigs to be at just one depth. Let's just say that 1/16 runs 6ft deep. I will use 2- 1/32 jigs on one pole, 1/24 & 1/32 on another, and 2- 1/24 on another. That way I have jigs running at 6-8 ft. covering all depths within the school. I believe bigguns like to hide under or over the school, so I will always have a line or 2 below thw school, usually the downlines. My 18's catch the biggest fish though.

"A good throw" is how far mine is out. The short rods dont cast as far as the longer rods so I let off the longer rods casts some to get my jigs close to the same distance away from the boat. "A good throw" means about as far as I can cast my short rods (5.5' and 6' rods).

I came up with 60 feet for me. I am lousy throwing jigs with long poles. So marked braided line is so I can get them all consistent out there. Some do 40 some do 50 or 60 what I read. Or some do a good throw. It is whatever works for you. I also put a 6 pound fluorocarbon leader with a swivel.

I don't understand the need for braided line when trolling. If anything, braided line adds another variable to the equation that isn't necessary. 99% of folks use 6lb. line, including me. 6lb. can handle most fish species, it's light enough to break off quickly when hung up. Nothing more is needed.

Here's something I've not tried longling at night. Can it be done, does it work?
