Thread: Pulling crank baits ?

I'm no pro and matter of fact I've never even tried it. On the hand, I have seen it done and have read about. I think the speed should between 1 1/2 and 2 mph. You do not pull jigs at the same time unless you wished to tie a trailer line on the back hook of the crank bait. Like jig trolling, depth depends on the fishes depth. You want your baits just above them. Length of line out, diameter of line (# test), size of lip on crank bait, and body size of crank bait all contribute to the depth the bait runs. Experimentation is the only true way to home in on those variables.

John, cranks work better on white crappie than black but some blacks will bite also you just have to get close to brush or some structure they are holding on. It's a lot of fun once you start catching em but it can break your heart when you get two or three cranks hung-up at once, just relined all my cranking reels with braid..... 1.5 mph is the speed I pull at and can pull for 5 hours on one trolling battery at that speed. All fish will hit the cranks along with catfish. Those charts for Bandit are the bible for pulling cranks Most times I pulll two 100, 2-200 and 2-300 until I find the right depth and some day all three will catch fish.

John, running 1.5 mph will pull lightweight jigs to the surface, or just under it. I havent experimented any to see what size jigs with splitshots it would take to move that fas t and to keep the jigs down 10' or so. If you have the room for extra rods then by all means experiment around a little with some jigs. I'd suggest getting a few 1/4 ounce sinkers to crimp on. If theyre too heavy you can always shorten thye lines out the back of the boat. IMO though, longline the jigs at day thirty and use those cranks once the sun gets up some.Thumbs Up
