Have you thought about rebuilding it,I ordered a rebuild kit from Evinrude website and rebuilt one for a 1957 Evinrude 35 horse and it worked fine, till my 17 year old nephew run it into a steel fence post in the water and basically destroyed the motor housing

Slabby...Are talking about rebuilding the carb. or the whole motor? I've seen pic's of the 15 hp carb., and the throat is bigger than the carb. on the 9.9.
I'm just trying to get more hp out of it. I carry a ton on stuff in the boat.

slapping a bigger carb on that lil motor will do very little for hp gain if anything noticeable ,yes the powerheads are the same on the 9.9 and 15 but thats not all that makes a 9.9 and a 15 hp different as exhaust is bigger as if you put more power in a motor you still have to get the power out,ony really substitute for horsepower is buy a bigger motor or if you carrying a big load around and stressing the lil motor to get on plane go down 1 pitch in propeller as that will dfinetly help to get on plane, hope this helps as ive seen many people personally try to do this with no real gains at al and really more of a pain in the xxx trying to keep tuning it thinking there going to get more power and in the end they just bought a bigger motor, the more power you try to put in a motor the more power needs to get out of the motor.....

I was talking about the carb only thought you only had carb problems but what billadelphia said putting a bigger carb won`t do it and the only way to get more power is to do what a mechanic would call porting the entire exaust so you have more and better airflow.

I have to respectfully disagree. I converted my 1976 9.9 Evinrude to 15hp with a carb change and saw noticeable gains in speed and hole shot. Pushing my 14 ft jon I went from 12mph to 15mph. It got even better when I changed out the reeds to a set of Boyesen performance reeds increasing the top end to 17 mph.
Ebay is where I picked up my NEw old stock Carb. IT was pricey but brand new. Used ones there as well.

According to Leroy's Ramblings (great site for small HP OMC owners), the 9.9 and 15 hp models only had the different carbs form 1974 to 1978. From 1979 to 1980, it was a different carb plus shims on the reed valves. From 1981 to 1992 (the end of the series) the differences were the carbs, reed valve shims, and the tuned exhaust. Aside from the model plate on the motor, those should be the only real differences between the two. The power comes from the 15hp having a WOT operating range of 5500-6500 (possibly 7000) and the carb, reeds, and exhaust tube help achieve those rpms. For any mechanically inclined person, changing the carb and adding the reed shims or replacing the reeds altogether with aftermarket ones should be a piece of cake. I would also imagine the exhaust tube swap wouldn't be too hard. It would require pulling the powerhead but really that in itself is very simple, the hard part of that job is disconnecting all of the linkages and other components that allow you to pull the powerhead and get to the powerhead bolts.

As to finding these parts, Ebay is probably your best bet. You may be best off to also buy an entire 15hp motor that is shot and remove the parts yourself as I think people try to part out the 15hp conversion parts at a premium cost.

Sounds like maybe you know a little about marine mechanics also slabby? Good input as i just chuckle reading some of the things people read and say as do they really think a manufacturer would make a 9.9 and a 15 hp model with only the carb being different to gain an extra 5 hp HMMMMMM I DUNNO I ASK MYSELF.But anyhow good luck to you on hopefully gaining all that extra power and i hope it works out for you before you realize youve spent way too much to gain 1 maybe 1.5 mph.But do respect everyones opinions as we all have them ,but on the real just save yourself the money and time and disappointment and sell the 9.9 and buy a 20 as i believe you will be much more happy with a 20 as those lil 9.9 still pull a good amount of money if running good and throw in maybe a few hundred of your own money(which you will spend anyway trying to get that extra hp that just aint gonna happen)and then i believe you will be a happy boater....good luck on which way you decide to go because after all it is just peoples opinions here you know...

Well mine was not an opinion. I did it and gained 5 mph clocked on my gps. Cost was $220 for brand new old stock parts.
I even a few comments about how quick my little boat is for 14ft flat bottom jon. Of coarse it still says 9.9 on the cowl
Did you know that the reason for a 9.9 was that for a long while the US Coast Guard did not require the registering on a boat if it was under 10hp and 16ft long.
