I know nothing of Lowrance. Are both gen 2's hd side and down imaging?

Yes, the Gen 2's have traditional sonar, side and down built in. You just connect the appropriate transducer.

I have the LSS2 transducer and Skimmer (traditional sonar) I could sell separately.

The HDS Gen 2 Touch units have the LSS2 structure scan unit (side and down imaging) and regular sonar built in - you just have to have the LSS2 transducer for side and down scan and separate sonar transducer (skimmer) installed. You can buy the entire Gen 2 7" Touch new with both transducers for around $1,000 at BPS (after rebate).

Gen 2 units that are not touch units and older Gen 1 units (i.e. the Lowrance HDS 7 above has the LSS1 structure scan unit not built in and is a separate component you have to put in your boat somewhere - taking up more space).

I have an HDS Gen 2 touch 7 and it is wonderful - only a larger screen could possibly be any better if you can afford one.
