That's crazy. Just about buy a new motor for that. Has he tore into it to see what parts he may need? What is wrong? Is the housing bent or busted or is shaft bent?

Marcus Crappie MD needs a lower unit for his 2004 Mercury 8HP 4 stroke outboard. Seemed to have a little mishap with it duckhunting yesterday. Anyone have experience rebuilding one of these little guys? $1300 to repair it seems a little high considering the boat was only $2000.

We have not taken it apart, the case seems fine. We did look at manual that stated you need several "special tools" to rebuild it.
Ok, what is it doing or not doing? Could be it just spun the hub in prop.

We ran into a mud flat, the motor died, and we couldn't get it out of gear. Repair shop took lower unit off and told buddy he needed a new lower unit cuz its locked up. May be an easy fix if we take it apart. Just not sure if we'll need special tools or not.
